Phor Tay High School has its roots in the Phor Tay School. It was founded by the Ven Fang Lian in 1935 to encompass an orphanage, school and Buddhist teaching. The orphanage and class for adult education were started in 1940. The late Aw Boon Hor was the biggest benefactor with a donation of Straits Singapore dollar 50,000.

After the war, the school was formally registered on 12 January 1946 with a rented premise. In 1947, the late Mr. Aw donated Singapore dollar 300,000 to build the school. This was completed in Dec 1949 and the primary school moved in. In 1952, the late Mr. Aw again donated to construct 6 classrooms for a high school. The high school was finally completed with a reconstituted Board of Trustees in 1957. The new Board raised money from amongst themselves and the public and the late wife of Mr. Aw donated a further RM 70,000. The land neighboring the primary school was purchased (the present site) and construction started. The high school was completed in 1960. Since then, there have been several expansions to the school to he present 16 classrooms with laboratories and library.
