The crowd of devotees slowly built up on the night of 30 April 2007 at the car park beside Than Hsiang Temple to witness the “Merit and Wisdom Nite”, held in celebration of Wesak Eve and also to introduce the use of light emitting diode (LED) “candles” in place of the wax candles as a measure of keeping the temple's environs free of candle fumes and heat and for the personal safety of the devotees.

PENANG: A Buddhist temple here is taking a bold move away from tradition, by replacing wax candles with LED-made candles, beginning on Wesak Day this May 1.

Than Hsiang Buddhist Temple abbot Rev Wei Wu said each electronic candle, fitted with rechargeable battery, could last for about 10 hours.
It is believed the temple will be the first in the country to introduce the gadget to devotees.

He said the candles were safer, durable and smoke-free compared with wax candles now being used by devotees for prayers.
